DEMPSEY VARNER

DEMPSEY VARNER m ELLEN LOWREY. To Sask.

All of the preceding Dempseys were Protestants from Ireland. If one can rely on the census records, some of the above Dempseys came to LC around 1835, while others came about 1848.

The following is another group of Dempseys, who comprised 3 related single family units, who also came to LC in 1848, on board the ship 'Seabird'. However, the following were all RC, from Galway, Ireland. They were all ill on arrival. All were quanantined at Grosse Isle, and all died there except for 3 of the children, who were adopted by Quebec families. One can imagine the impact on family back home in Ireland at the news of this epic tragedy. It is not known if any of these 3 surviving children ever came to Megantic County. Which 3 of the following 21 people survived the typhus, is not known. The ages given below, are the ages of each person in 1848 at the time of their arrival in LC :

Family 1: Dempsey Henry age 50 b 1798, Catherine 47 b 1801, Patrick 21 b 1827, Margaret 18 b 1830, Mary 15 b 1833, John 13 b 1835, Anne 13 b 1835, Michael 10 b 1838, Henry 4 b 1844, Catherine 1 b 1846

Family 2: Dempsey John age 57 b 1791, Bridget 55 b 1793, John 30 b 1818, Biddy 30 b 1818, Margaret 6 b 1842, Ann 5 b 1843, Catherine 1 b 1847
